Log Stores Built To Last.
So, why would anyone want to buy a log-stores.co.uk log store? I'll be the first to admit, they aren't for everyone. If you're the kind of person who's looking for something cheap and cheerful then, a quick look on the Internet will bring forth a whole host of sellers offering log stores in the £75 to £300 bracket. Before I set about building ours, I carried out an extensive search of the web in order to get some ideas of how it should be made.
Whilst one or two suppliers were selling something that looked half decent, most of what I saw fell short of the mark and, quite frankly, just didn't look up to the job. And they certainly didn't look like they would provide us with year upon year of trouble free sevice.
You see, when I was at school, some years ago now, I distinctly remember my woodwork teacher telling me that if two pieces of timber were to be joined together, then an appropriately cut joint should be made. All that the glue and screws (or nails) should be used for were to hold the joint together. Any structural load should be supported by the timber itself. It made good sense to me. After all, any wood glue is only as strong as the very top layer of timber it's applied to.
So, to save myself the trouble of having to make another one in a few year's time. I elected to spend
some money on good quality materials and to take my time cutting all the necessary joints and assembling it in a manner my woodwork teacher would have approved of. The whole thing was constructed of Tanalised® softwood, which is guaranteed to remain free from wet rot or pest infestation for a considerable number of years. You can get a clear picture of how it was made by clicking here.
Once I'd put the finishing touches to my own firewood store, I was bowled over by the compliments I recieved from passers-by and callers to the house. So much so, it occurred to me that there may well be others who would want a log store that's built to last. Unfortunately, I simply don't have the facilities to make them in my own workshop in any sort of quantity. So I got together with a good friend of mine, Julian, and asked him if he could make them at his woodworking factory (Focus Fireplaces) on my behalf. I also discussed my intentions with our log supplier, Carl. His input was gratefully accepted and some of his ideas were built into the final version. So, if you're the kind of person who knows that it's worth spending that little extra to get something that's going to last, please give me, Steve, a call on 0845 644 1440 during office hours and I'll arrange for one to be made for you and delivered right to your door.
